Plan your study hours

Give each domain its share of your time.

The share of scored questions is the simplest guide to where your hours should go. This is arithmetic from NHA’s question counts, not an NHA recommendation.

Spread it over the weeks you have.

Pick the weeks until your exam to see the hours for each week: 6.7 hours a week for 6 weeks.

Start where the most questions are.

Routine Blood Collections and Safety and Compliance carry 54 of the 100 scored questions. The study guide turns this into a plan.

Common questions

Is this the official NHA exam? No. Phlebotomy Tech Prep is an independent study app, not made by or connected to NHA. Our questions are original and follow NHA’s published test plan.

Is this the CPT coding exam? No. Here CPT means NHA’s Certified Phlebotomy Technician credential. Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) is a medical coding system of the American Medical Association; this site does not cover it.

How many questions are on the CPT exam? 120 multiple-choice questions in 2 hours: 100 scored and 20 unscored pretest questions.

What score do you need to pass? A scaled score of 390. NHA reports CPT scores on a scale from 200 to 500.

Who can take the CPT exam? You need a high school diploma or equivalent (or expect one within 18 months), a phlebotomy training program in the past 5 years or supervised work experience, and proof of at least 30 venipunctures and 10 capillary sticks.

Can you retake it? If you fail, you may retake after a 30-day wait. You get 3 attempts, with at least 30 days between attempts. After the third attempt, each further failure requires a 1-year wait. Every retake requires re-registering and paying the full fee.

Where do you take it? At an NHA-authorized school or employer site, at a PSI test center, or by Live Remote Proctoring from home.

Does it work offline? Yes. Everything works offline except buying, restoring and sending email.

Where is my study data? On your iPhone only. To erase it, use Profile → Reset my progress, or delete the app. To delete your purchase record at RevenueCat, email us your Support ID from Profile → Privacy.

When can I get the app? Phlebotomy Tech Prep: CPT is coming soon to the App Store for iPhone. Until then, the exam guides on this site are free.
